Cecilia Escobar-Duplan, 25, was driving home around 4:15 Sunday morning when she witnessed a car crash on I-95 near the Delaware Avenue off-ramp in Wilmington, according to police and 6abc.
She got out of her car to help the Jeep driver who had reportedly spun out of control. While rendering aid, a driver hit Escobar-Duplan on the side of the road, CBS3 and police said.
She was rushed to an area hospital where she later died.
The Jeep driver was treated at an area hospital and later released for minor injuries, CBS3 reports.
Police told the outlet impairment was not a factor in the incident.
Escobar-Duplan had served as a security officer within the Department of Public Safety since 2018, police said.
"Those of us that knew Cecilia know that this is exactly the kind of person she was," WCUPD said in a statement.
"Cecilia would always go out of her way to help anyone and everyone in need! We will all miss the smile and brightness that she brought to this Department and the campus community."
She was also a volunteer firefighter with Wilmington Manor Volunteer Fire Company.
She was a 2018 graduate of Delaware Technical Community College, according to her LinkedIn page.
Over $10,000 in funeral expenses had been raised on a GoFundMe campaign as of Tuesday evening.
It was not immediately known if any charges were filed.
